The Fort Wayne, IN city council voted 7-2 to approve an ordiance that will eliminate collective bargaining for non-pubic safety unions. IAM District 90, Local 2569 represents 150 civil city and utility employees in Fort Wayne.
John Shoaff (D-at-large) voted for the ordinance in an effort to bring forth a vote to reconsider in two weeks.
The two other Democrats on the council, members Geoff Paddock (D-5th) and Glynn Hines (D-6th) voted against the ordinance. Hines believes this is politically motivated.
"The driving motivation that I believe is the republican convention which is coming to town, and they want to be able to rally around and say they got a victory against the working man," said Hines.
The motion to reconsider would be made on June 10. If the motion to reconsider passes, another vote on the ordinance would be taken.
Mayor Tom Henry has said he will veto the anti-collective bargaining ordinance. That would take place on June 24th.
